Mossley achieved Fairtrade Town Status on 5th September 2011
Mossley is proud to be a Fairtrade Town, the 525th in the UK.
Becoming a Fairtrade Town is an incredible achievement but remains only one significant step on our Fairtrade Journey!
We, as consumers, have an important role to play to improve the situation for producers across the world.
We are using our power as a community to make trade work for communities in developing countries.
Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.
Becoming a Fairtrade Town means that, as a community, we make a stand against poverty by supporting Fairtrade.
What does becoming a Fairtrade Town mean?
There are five goals to achieving Fairtrade Town Status:
Goal 1: Local Council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade.
Mossley Town Council passed the resolution on 11th November 2009
Goal 2: A range of Fairtrade products are readily available
Local shops and cafes have been encouraged to stock Fairtrade products.
Goal 3: Fairtrade products used by a number of local workplaces and community organisations
Several businesses and workplaces now use Fairtrade tea and coffee as do many of the town’s community organisations.
Goal 4: Media coverage and popular support
Local press provides good coverage and events are well supported.
Goal 5: A local Fairtrade steering group is convened
Fairtrade Mossley Steering group meets monthly.
Currently there are around 20 local workplaces, all local schools, several community groups and 7 Faith communities supporting Fairtrade by using Fairtrade tea and coffee etc. and in other ways.
In the future we hope to produce a Mossley Town Fairtrade Directory
